sharif waked’s practice involves
video, installation and painting
in an ongoing examination of the
complexities of middle eastern
histories and politics. waked’s art
reflects on propaganda strategies
within the region, and on globalised
images of conflict that have emerged
in the international media. much of
his work strives to remind viewers of
the rich literary and artistic heritages
binding islamic cultures, which are
often buried in mediatised clichés.
To be continued… 2009 replicates
the codes and conventions of a
martyrdom video. what appears to
be a suicide bomber’s declaration is,
in fact, a reading of A Thousand and
One Nights, the classic text of the
islamic golden age, narrated by a
famous palestinian actor.

Left/Right Slide 2010
a number of significant new art works
were commissioned for ‘21st century:
art of the first decade’, including
carsten höller’s Left/Right Slide 2010
(see p.70). höller’s slide projects have
been completed at major venues
across europe but never before in the
asia pacific region.
höller’s slides are among the most
significant recent examples of
contemporary art’s turn towards
audience participation and
experience. Left/Right Slide is a
surprising and even transformative
experience for visitors, encouraging
a sense of exhilaration, disorientation
and ‘letting go’.
