Patterns in nature
So many things in the world have
patterns — from starfish and shells to
leaves and strawberries.
Where else
have you seen patterns in nature?
The patterns found in nature are
often not perfect or symmetrical,
but a bit uneven.
This helps animals
to camouflage themselves in their
environment.
In 1202, Italian mathematician
Leonardo Fibonacci wrote a book
on how patterns in nature, like
the arrangement of leaves on a
branch or the number of petals on
a flower, could be worked out using
mathematical equations.
The way of
working out these patterns became
known as ‘Fibonacci numbers’ or
‘Fibonacci sequences’.
