WHAT IS PATTERN?
A pattern is made when similar or
different elements are repeated
over and over again. For example,
a square is an
element
, a
chessboard grid is a
pattern
.
Patterns appear everywhere —
they can be found in nature and
people can make them as well.
We can
see
patterns on animals,
in the shapes and colours of fur
or scales. We can
hear
patterns
in music,
experience
patterns
through dancing, and
learn
about
patterns through rules, such as
times tables in mathematics.
DID YOU KNOW?
A chessboard grid has a symmetrical pattern
made up of black-and-white squares. Symmetrical
patterns, where one half is the mirror image of
the other, were traditionally thought to represent
order, perfection and beauty.
