Dadang Chr i stanto

For those: Who are poor, Who are suffer(ing), Who are oppressed, Who are voiceless, Who are powerless,

Who are burdened, Who are victims of violence, Who are victims of a dupe, Who are victims of injustice

1993

For Dadang Christanto, violence is not only a physical act but also

occurs wherever power or pressure results in poverty, injustice

and dependence. This installation pays homage to victims of

physical violence through the ages. Conscious of the historical

marginalisation of individuals who are poor, oppressed, or lack

the means or opportunity for personal expression, the work acts

as a memorial to those who have been victims of this less visible

but perhaps more insidious form of violence. In remembrance of

these lives, Christanto creates space for a personal redemptive

gesture — the audience is encouraged to offer tribute and

consolation via letters, or other mementos.
