Anmanar i Brown

Kungkarrakalpa Tjukurrpa (Seven Sisters Dreaming)

2002

Anmanari Brown is a senior Irrunytju painter whose work reflects

a deep knowledge of the landscape and the mythology that

resides within.

Seven Sisters Dreaming

is based on an ancestral

narrative from the Central Desert region. It tells the journey of

seven young women who are pursued cross-country by a sly,

lustful man named Wati Nyiru. In order to remain close to them,

he adopts various disguises, such as a tree or a bird. The sisters

hide and escape detection and, growing increasingly angry,

Wati Nyiru uses sorcery to make one extremely sick. When she

dies, the other sisters take her up to the sky and they all became

stars together. When you look into the night sky, you can see

the seven stars of the seven sisters (the Pleiades) followed by

Wati Nyiru (Orion).
