‘Light and Space: Colonial Art and Queensland’
examined how Western visual art in Queensland
began with the work of exploration artists such
as William Westall, who accompanied Matthew
Flinders on his circumnavigation of Australia
from 1801 to 1803. Westall’s prints from the
voyage were shown, along with a number of
new acquisitions. These included lithographs
produced in Brisbane in 1865 by Silvester
Diggles (1817–80), a notable ornithologist and
a key figure in the early cultural life of the city.
The display also included JA Clarke’s
Panorama
of Brisbane
1880, on loan from the Queensland
Museum, several significant examples of furniture
and works by English-born R Godfrey Rivers —
regarded as the ‘father figure’ of art
in Queensland.
