Major postwar sculptural works from the Gallery’s
Collection are profiled in Gallery 3, overlooking
the sculpture courtyard and adjacent to the
light-filled space of the Robin Gibson entry
of the Queensland Art Gallery. The selected
works reflect the inventiveness of twentieth-
century sculpture, as artists explored the new
vocabularies of abstract art and experimented
with industrial materials and methods. Key
Australian works include Robert Klippel’s
No.
247 Metal construction
1965–68 and Ron
Robertson-Swann’s
Elvira Madigan
1971, which
were exhibited together in the 1973 Biennale
of Sydney.

'Just on 49 per cent of
visitors to the Warhol
show were under the
age of 39, which is
extraordinary for a
state gallery. The old
ideas about youth not
supporting the arts no
longer holds true in
Queensland.'
Tony Ellwood, Director, Queensland Art
Gallery, in Herald Sun, 27 October 2008.
