THE
WATERCOLOURS
OF KENNETH
MACQUEEN
10 November 2007 – 5 May 2008, QAG
‘Making it Modern’ highlighted Queensland artist
Kenneth Macqueen’s importance as a key Australian
modernist. The exhibition featured more than 130
watercolours, drawn from the Gallery’s Collection and
from public and private collections.
In 1922, Macqueen (1897–1960) settled on a property
near Millmerran on Queensland’s Darling Downs.
The open, undulating landscape became the focus of
both his farming and his art. Macqueen’s watercolours
reflected an optimistic vision of the country he worked —
his crisp, clear washes evoked its climate and landforms.
