Exploring Outback: Artists' Responses to Life on the Land
The 2002 Year of the Outback gives us an opportunity to reflect on what we understand as our "outback". Although most Australians live along the coastline and have little direct experience of the outback, they cherish the notion of its existence and are fiercely proud of the tenacious individuals who inhabit this distinctly Australian environment.

From the colonial period to the present day, Australian artists such as Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan and Jon Molvig have been captivated by the outback. This exhibition examines how artists have given expression to its vastness, harshness and isolation. It reveals the rich visual heritage that has emerged and shaped this important aspect of our national identity.

Otherworlds: Images of Fantasy and Fiction

Otherworlds: Images of Fantasy and Fiction is an exhibition that explores aspects of fantasy, fictitious worlds and surrealist imagery through QAG Collection works.

International and Australian artists are represented by works in a variety of media including painting, printmaking, video, drawing, assemblage, collage and photography. A common theme which runs through the exhibition is ‘imaginationą and the role it has in the creation of fantastic worlds, frightening visions and bizarre, strange beauty. The exhibition will tour to regional Queensland cities and venues throughout 2002 followed by a presentation, in an expanded form, at the Queensland Art Gallery in 2003.
