Wed 5 Lecture: 'Pentimento: Images of the Virgin Mary' by John Murphy 10.30am. Lecture Theatre.
This lecture considers paintings of the Virgin Mary, particularly from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance. It reviews the different functions, which the paintings served, and the roles which were undertaken by the Virgin Mary. The talk will also relate these images and meanings to the development of well-known fairy-tales of the time, such as Sleeping Beauty. The lecture is in association with the exhibition ‘Pentimento’, which focuses on the Gallery’s sacred painting by the Master of Frankfurt, ‘The Virgin and Child’, and will be delivered by the exhibition’s curator, John Murphy.

Wed 12 Public Tour: Pentimento: Conservation and Infrared imaging by Anne Carter, Acting Head of Conservation 10:30am. Go on a ‘Behind the scenes’ tour of the Conservation department with Anne Carter, Acting Head of Conservation. No charges apply however bookings are required, as places are limited. Please call Melinda Simshauser, Education Liaison Officer on 3840 7255 to reserve your place on the tour.

Wed 5 Lecture: Pentimento: Revealing the Master of Frankfurt’s Nazi History 10.30am. Lecture Theatre.
Andrew Dudley (Acting Head of Registration) and Naomi Flatt (Research Assistant) will speak on the provenance of the Master of Frankfurt work in the Gallery’s Collection. Gallery research revealed that the work was looted by Nazi forces, before being restituted to its rightful owner following World War Two.
