Love & Death: Art in the Age of Queen Victoria
30 May – 28 July 2002
Seductive and compelling, this exhibition presents over sixty beautiful paintings produced during the era of Queen Victoria. Rich with symbolism and executed with technical mastery, the paintings in Love & Death demonstrate the allure which has prompted a major revival in the popularity of the art of Victorian Britain.
Roddam Spencer Stanhope, 1829-1908. Why seek ye the living among the dead? c.1875 or 1890. Collection: Art Gallery of New South Wales |
Drawing on stories from classical mythology and literature, ancient and modern history, and contemporary life and morals of the time, artists of the Victorian era returned again and again to the fundamental themes of love and death. Pre-Raphaelite imagery is also a feature of the exhibition, with works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Everett Millais.
