TRANSPARENT: WATERCOLOUR IN QUEENSLAND 1850s–1980s |
PAGES: |
180 pages hardcover colour illustrations |
|
Watercolour has long been an important medium in Queensland. Transparent is the first comprehensive survey of the Gallery’s watercolour collection, bringing to light many never seen before works from our substantial holdings from the mid nineteenth century to the 1980s.
Watercolours by artists Conrad Martens and Harriet Jane Neville-Rolfe are included, together with works by Vida Lahey, JJ Hilder, and Kenneth Macqueen, celebrating the spirit of the modern era. Queensland Indigenous painter Joe Rootsey and Brisbane expressionists WG Grant and Joy Roggenkamp also feature, as does a selection of paintings by artists who served in World War Two — Douglas Annand, Douglas Green, James Wieneke. Beautifully illustrated, Transparent includes a curatorial overview of the artworks, a conservator’s insight into fine art papers, and biographical notes on the artists.
The exhibition ‘Transparent: Watercolour in Queensland 1850s–1980s’ will be on display at the Queensland Art Gallery from 22 March to 20 July 2014.

Australian Art: A History |
PAGES: |
584 pages hardcover, colour illustrations |
|
Australian Art: A History provides an in-depth overview of the major developments in Australian art, from its origins to the present day. Commencing with ancient Aboriginal rock art and early colonialists’ interpretations of their surroundings, and moving on to discuss the formation of an Australian identity through art, the shock of early modernism and the notorious Heide circle, this book leaves no stone unturned. It finishes with the popular recognition of modern Indigenous art and contemporary Australian art and its place in the world, with a major emphasis placed on the art of the past fifty years. Written by Sasha Grishin, leading Australian art historian, art critic and curator who has published some twenty books and over two thousand articles on various aspects of art, this book is his magnum opus, a comprehensive and definitive history of Australian art, and is not to be missed.

The Dealer is the Devil: An Insider's History of the Aboriginal Art Trade |
PAGES: |
480 pages paperback colour illustrations |
|
Adrian Newstead’s explosive memoir lifts the lid on what Robert Hughes once described as "the last great art movement of the 20th century". After thirty years sitting around campfires with Aboriginal artists all over Australia, Newstead has produced the definitive expose of “the first great art movement of the 21st century". From remote indigenous communities with their dispossessed populations of tribal elders and troubled youth, to the gleaming white box galleries, high powered auction houses, and formidable art institutions of major cities all over the world, Newstead combines personal anecdotes with an insider’s grasp of the international art market. |

Melanesia: Art and Encounter |
PAGES: |
368 pages hardcover colour illustrations |
|
The British Museum’s pre-eminent Melanesian collection is uniquely important, containing over 20,000 items that are core to understanding the cultures of the western Pacific. The extraordinary art styles represented, from groups such as New Guinea, New Ireland and the Solomon Islands, with material relating to ancestors, houses, feasting, festivals, family and clan, are of interest not only in themselves but also for how they have influenced European artists since the nineteenth century. With contributions from a wide range of international scholars, anthropologists, indigenous peoples and artists, this comprehensive book is illustrated with over 300 colour images and contextual photographs, responding to the collection from the point of view of anthropologists and the people responsible for its creation. |

Danie Mellor: Exotic Lies Sacred Ties |
PAGES: |
144 pages hardcover colour illustrations |
|
Danie Mellor’s work is simultaneously beautiful whilst probing the flaws in our accepted view of history. Finely crafted, embellished and framed, with images and devices that disarm with humour, narrative and a play on the ‘exotic’, the work nonetheless confronts and confounds our understanding of the past. With Aboriginal and European ancestry, and his experience of living in Australia, Scotland, England and South Africa, Mellor’s personal vantage point enables him to see more broadly than most. |
