Ian Fairweather: Late Works 1953–74 |
Angela Goddard |
PAGES: |
108 pages paperback colour illustrations |
This richly illustrated publication presents an insightful consideration of Ian Fairweather’s major achievements of the period from 1953 when he moved to Bribie Island in Moreton Bay, off the coast of Brisbane, to his death in 1974. It includes his abstractions of 1959–61 and his religious masterworks Gethsemane 1958 and Epiphany 1962. Working in a hut amidst a stand of Bribie Island Pines, Fairweather transformed his memories of travel in Asia and observations of contemporary life into complex layered works of remarkable vision.
Drawn from public and Australian private collections, including the substantial holdings of the Queensland Art Gallery, the catalogue is published in association with the exhibition ‘Ian Fairweather: Late Works 1953–74’, QAG, 3 November 2012 to 3 March 2013. Read more

Alphastation/Alphaville is the catalogue produced by Brisbane's Institute of Modern Art (IMA) in conjunction with the exhibition by the same name held during November 2010 and July 2011. This collection is selected from a body of work entitled AlphaStation/Alphaville; the title conflates Roberts’s recollection of childhood experiences in his hometown, Alpha, in central Queensland, and Jean-Luc Godard’s classic sci-fi film, Alphaville 1965, set on a distant planet far in the future but filmed on location in night-time Paris. Much of Roberts’ work explores fame, celebrity, notoriety and white culture: portraits of Roberts as Adolf Hitler and Andy Warhol blur lines between homosexual, homophobic and asexual culture and, obliquely but provocatively, engage the idea of repression. PAGES: |
145 pages hardcover colour illustrations |
Australian Symbolism: The Art of Dreams by Denise Mimmocchi features paintings, sculpture, photographs and decorative arts by some of the most well-known Australian artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The only book of its kind, Australian Symbolism investigates two main streams of the symbolist genre: Internationally trained artists, such as Rupert Bunny, Bernard Hall, and George Lambert; and those trained in Australia, including Charles Condor, Sydney Long, Tom Roberts, and Arthur Streeton, each of whom defined the local experience. Featuring art works based on the representation of women as femme fatales or angels, in sleep, trance states, myth and music, this is a book not to missed. Read more |
