| QAGOMA ANNOUNCES NEW TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY |
The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) today announced the establishment of a new $40,000 scholarship named in honour of Vida Lahey (1882-1968), one of Queensland's most celebrated painters.
The Vida Lahey Memorial Travelling Scholarship is funded through the estate of the artist's niece, Shirley Lahey and will be offered biennially to a visual arts or art history graduate. Students graduating in 2014 from art history studies are also eligible.
QAGOMA Director Chris Saines said that the prize was one of Queensland's richest travelling scholarships on offer, and honoured an artist who was dedicated to art education.
'Administered by the QAGOMA Foundation, this new scholarship will give an emerging Australian artist or art history scholar the opportunity to develop their talents and existing understanding of Australia art through an itinerary of national or overseas travel,' he said.
'We must acknowledge the foresight and generosity of Shirley Lahey, whose bequest leaves a great legacy in honour of her aunt and has made this scholarship possible,' said Mr Saines.
'Shirley Lahey has honoured not only Vida Lahey and her achievements, but has recognised the significant benefit travel and further learning can have for an artist or art history scholar.'
Arts Minister Ian Walker said the Vida Lahey Memorial Travelling Scholarship was a fitting tribute to its namesake, as it supported contemporary Australian art scholarship, knowledge and creative practice.
'Vida Lahey's art practice was dramatically influenced by her experiences in England during World War 1 and her exposure to the art and history of Europe. It is through the generosity of Vida's late niece Shirley that QAGOMA is able to offer this extraordinary opportunity to a visual arts graduate or an art history student,' Mr Walker said.
'These kinds of partnerships are invaluable to arts education and scholarship.'
Eminent Queensland artist Frances Vida Lahey (1882-1968), whose striking watercolours and oils captured the attention and praise of Brisbane society, campaigned fiercely for sharing cultural knowledge in Queensland. Lahey arranged lunchtime lectures at the Queensland Art Gallery, campaigned for art education for children and helped establish the significant Queensland Art Fund with Queensland sculptor Daphne Mayo.
Applications for the inaugural 2014 Vida Lahey Memorial Travelling Scholarship are now open. Applicants must be over 18 years, have recently undertaken visual arts studies or be art history graduates from a recognised tertiary institute, and be Australian citizens or permanent residents. Final year art history students graduating in 2014 are also eligible.
Applicants must demonstrate a sound understanding of Australian art history or contemporary art practice and show how their travel itinerary will influence the growth of their art practice or art history studies and make a contribution to an existing understanding of Australian art.
