Annual Review 2018
45 2018 IN REVIEW The APT9 exhibition publication illuminates the work of over 80 artists and projects as well as looking at the wider themes that emerge from a stunning collection of artwork from across the region. The APT9 Kids book Ali’s Boat was adapted from an artwork by Iraqi artist Sadik Kwaish Alfraji, telling a story about his past, his family and his relationship with his country. Photograph: Chloë Callistemon BOOKS The Women’s Wealth project focuses on art forms made by women in Bougainville and the Solomon Islands. Cane and pandanus weaving, shell ornamentation and earthenware pottery are all used to explore ideas of value in these matrilineal societies. Growing out of a week- long workshop in Bougainville, Women’s Wealth highlights the significance of creative spaces in those communities. Co-curated with respected Bougainville-born curator Sana Balai, the project was a catalyst for extensive community building, including a Creative Circle workshop during the opening weekend, and a Student Workshop. Support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Gordon Darling Foundation and other partners enabled great community outcomes for the project, including a standalone website to make the project accessible to those in the region, while the participation of artists from the Solomon Islands was supported by QAGOMA’s Oceania Women’s Fund.
