Annual Review 2018
THE 9TH ASIA PACIFIC TRIENNIAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART (APT9) 24 NOVEMBER 2018 – 28 APRIL 2019 | QAGOMA The Gallery’s flagship project, the Asia Pacific Triennial , is a deep dive into new art from an expansive and dynamic region. This exhibition of nearly 500 works sprawls across both GOMA and QAG, allowing emerging themes in the practices of more than 80 artists and collectives to surface in a surprising and revealing display that takes the cultural temperature of many disparate but interconnected communities. The exhibition took form out of the extraordinary array of ideas, practices and materials that engage and occupy artists in our part of the world, exploring the mobility of artists and the mutability of artistic traditions, nature and spirituality in a digital age, the impact of political forces on the cultural condition and the various definitions of value held by different cultures. An exhibition of cultural currency and vitality, it features a strong presence of First Nations artists from across the region and is the first APT in which the voices of women are in the majority. Among many partners, great support from Tourism and Events Queensland, Australia Council for the Arts, UAP, Virgin Australia, Emporium Hotel South Bank and Yering Station enabled the Gallery to realise the exhibition. Collaborating institutions for APT9 included the Dhaka Art Summit and the University of the South Pacific. A joint commission with Singapore Art Museum will also be shown in the 2019 Singapore Biennale.
