Annual Review 2018
One of the most exciting Australian artists working today, Tony Albert is acclaimed for his practice in object-based assemblages, painting, photography, video and installation — all of which provide a powerful response to the misrepresentation of Australia’s First Peoples in popular and collectible imagery. ‘ Visible ’ was the first major art museum survey of this mid-career artist’s powerful work. Speaking to one of Albert’s frequently used quotes — ‘Invisible is my favourite colour’ — the exhibition tackled the issues of Aboriginal misrepresentation with humour and poignancy, and included the artist’s epic reappropriations of kitsch ‘Aboriginalia’. ‘ We Can Be Heroes ’, Albert’s project at the Children’s Art Centre, invited kids and families to explore how we can be empowered by overcoming our fears. The Children’s Art Centre project ‘ We Can Be Heroes ’ featured artworks made by kids from the Warakurna community in Western Australia in collaboration with Tony Albert / Photograph: Chloë Callistemon Prominent Indigenous Australian creatives, including Sydney Festival Director Wesley Enoch , joined Tony Albert for a series of talks themed around his work Pay Attention 2008–09 / Private collection / Photograph: Chloë Callistemon Tony Albert / Girramay/Yidinyji/Kuku Yalanji peoples / Moving the line 2018 / Vintage playing cards, coasters and matchboxes / 153 x 183cm / Commissioned 2018 with funds from the Future Collective through the QAGOMA Foundation TONY ALBERT VISIBLE 2 JUNE – 7 OCTOBER 2018 | QAG
