Annual Review 2017
AUSTRAL IAN COLLECT ION FROM 30 SEPTEMBER 201 7 | QAG The Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Galleries were refreshed and revitalised for the new Australian Collection display, after being closed for more than a year while artworks were stored there during the upgrade and expansion of QAG’s Collection Storage. This gave the Gallery’s Director and curators a rare opportunity to consider new and innovative ways to present the Gallery’s Australian art holdings, which represent more than 120 years of collecting. These reconfigured spaces capture major historical moments from first contact to colonisation, and exploration to immigration. Bringing the Indigenous and contemporary Australian collections together with the Gallery’s historical holdings, the display emphasises stories about Queensland and Brisbane from the region’s own perspective. ABOVE | Ian Fairweather’s powerful Gethsemane 1958 entered the Collection thanks to Philip Bacon am , a tremendous addition to already noteworthy holdings of work by Fairweather, in particular his series of works on a biblical theme.
