O’ KEEFFE , PRESTON, COSS INGTON SMI TH: MAKING MODERNI SM 1 1 MARCH – 1 1 JUNE 201 7 | QAG The iconic art of Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the most significant American painters of the twentieth century, was presented alongside modernist masterpieces by two of her Australian contemporaries, Margaret Preston and Grace Cossington Smith. Although not directly connected, these kindred spirits rejected the conventions of the past to forge new ways of picturing a changing world. O’Keeffe expressed the forms and lines of New Mexico, Preston articulated the primordial character of Australia’s unique native environment, and Cossington Smith painted glowing and intimate landscapes within reach of her home in Sydney’s outer suburbs. 2017 IN REVIEW 14 REVIEW / 2017
