AUSTRALIAN CINÉMATHÈQUE Across its two state-of-the-art cinemas, the Gallery’s Australian Cinémathèque shows the best works from artists and filmmakers, ranging from restored historical gems to comprehensive retrospectives, and from genre programs to cult favourites. Working closely with the estate of filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos , the Cinémathèque presented an exclusive retrospective (15 April – 22 May) for this distinct and distinguished modern filmmaker. Angelopoulos’s work provides an epic vision of modern Greece and the Balkans through allegories of its turbulent social and political history. The program was presented with some of the last existing 35mm prints and live English subtitles. The allegorical films of Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi , once a soldier and prisoner of war, examine contemporary social themes through genre. A retrospective selection of his work (7–28 August) was presented in partnership with the Japan Foundation. Music enriches identity and transforms both creator and listener. ‘Get What You Want’ (2 September – 2 October) was a program of documentary and fiction films covering country, disco, folk, hip hop, house, jazz, punk, metal, reggae and soul, which appraised the creative and social dynamics that infuse these musical subcultures. Musician, activist and raconteur Henry Rollins stopped by the Cinémathèque for a sold-out slideshow detailing his extensive travels around the world.
