Self portrait for town and country 1990

Self portrait for town and country 1990
Oil on canvas

Full screen

This self portrait reflects the division between the experiences of town and country, and denotes disparate sides of Robinson’s character. The contrast is told through the painting’s composition. Robinson sits in a striped suit within an enclosed space, defined by series of lines which are echoed in the frowns worn by him and his dogs. The background painting shows Robinson’s other self, standing on a hill’s profile in a landscape created from curved forms – a shape obeyed even by his rifle.
