In the fourth panel of Four seasons (see Detail 1), William and Shirley Robinson gallop into a glorious sunset at the very edge of a winter’s day. The artist has depicted William and Shirley mounted on a sturdy barrel-chested steed. The looping length of the path, rollicking through the seasons, dwarfs its owners; but they are the lords of this creation nevertheless. As in other landscapes by Robinson, there is an explicit tension between the puny pretensions of humankind and the grand setting of nature.
